“I am convinced that if we had not had the first aid course given by CSD the victim would probably not have survived the accident.”

Car accident report.
A motorcycle taxi ran into our vehicle on a country road. The bike was heavily loaded, with a driver and a passenger. In the car there was only the driver of Welthungerhilfe.

The car driver looked frantically for help. Fortunately one of our teams of three people was nearby.

They speeded to the location of the accident for assistance, and found out that there were victims on the ground.

Meanwhile A WHH staff member remained firm and knew he had to act quickly if he wanted to save their lives. He tried to call but there was no telephone network at this location to contact the office to send help.

When they approached the driver of the motorcycle, they perceived at first sight he had open fractures on his right leg and also arterial bleeding. As he was lying on his stomach, he was put in a lateral position. As he was half unconscious, we opened the airway to allow him to breathe normally.

I untied my belt to make a tourniquet to stop the bleeding. Afterwards we put splints with tree branches around the wounded leg to support the fractures.

Afterwards we consulted the passenger who was in a much less serious condition than the driver. She was conscious and she spoke well. She was put in lateral position nonetheless. She had small injuries on the heel.

Since we could only count on ourselves, we boarded the victims in our vehicle in order to transport them to the nearest hospital.

It is due to the training that security Welthungerhilfe had organized for its staff, given in Bangui, Central African Republic, by Centre for Safety and Development (CSD), two weeks before the accident, that we had good reflexes of how to intervene in case of an accident.

I am convinced that if we had not had the first aid course given by CSD the victim would probably not have survived the accident.

Thanks to the staff of Centre for Safety and Development.

Taxilien, Member of the Welthungerhilfe national staff.
