Looking back: NGO Security Conference 2015

On the 16th of April 2015 CSD organised the annual NGO Security Conference. It was a great success attended by a mixed audience, with backgrounds in HR, security, proposal writing and finance.
The day started with a presentation from Mr. Michel de Jong, an international security manager, speaking about the business perspective on security management. He focused on the public’s opinion of the security industry, physical and digital security and effective crisis management.

The second speaker was Mrs. Raquel Vazquez Llorente from EISF. She presented the NGO Risk Management Expense Tool, part of the paper: Cost of Security Risk Management for NGOs. A practical tool to specify the costs of Security Management within your organization.

In the afternoon three rounds of donor presentations were organized. The main goal was to find out if and how NGO security costs could be budgeted in proposals. Donor representatives Mr. Neil Elliot from DFID, Mr. Anthony Val Flynn from ECHO and Mr. Jelte van Wieren from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands presented their respective policy on this issue. The main learning point in the afternoon was that donors expect security to be budgeted for in proposals. If your request is realistic and well-argued you should be able to receive this funding.
